Paper Thin
The mixed media collages constituting the ‘Paper Thin’ series feature details both precise and delicate. Figurative drawings are surrounded by a dense layering of painted patterns, cut paper florals, and wrought iron crowns. The pieces evoke dualities of strength and vulnerability, as stark black fences crown the regal female figures, but these barriers are, in the end, only paper thin.
The central figure in each piece is sparsely painted, offering an elegant silhouette against a background of paper elements that speak of an interior life. Protected by a fence, sheltered by walls, each figure is nestled in this domestic setting. However, the wallpaper is torn, revealing wooden slats and vines. And yet from this brokenness, flowers bloom.
In its sculptural depths, ‘Paper Thin’ explores the tension between revealing and concealing, embodying Christine’s love of transforming her materials and inviting her viewers to participate in a play of stillness and movement, fragility and solidity, rigidity and organic flow.
