I had to step away from studio for a day. Having taken some time off work to dedicate myself more to my art, "work" has seeped into days, nights, and weekends. I took a break today and went to the gallery to see the Picasso show and did a small sketch. I enjoyed seeing the assemblages/collage works as well as his sculptures. These two stood out for me today.

The skull is misshapen and imperfect. The markings show some evidence of careful handling, but it has the dents, erosions, and crevices speak so directly to decay. There are teeth that have been shaped, but then it is battered back into its original form. The nose especially shows corrosive wear.

The sculpture of the woman's head is peculiar. Instead of the shattered, fragmented works, this one has the same approach. Each perspective yields an entirely different knowledge of this face.

I was amazed at the breadth of his work and how much his work went on divergent paths. I hope to be as experimental and brave.
